early morning bikram yoga

holy moley did i get up early today! i drove dane, my boyfriend, to the airport at 5:30 am and then booked it back to the city to catch the 6:00 am bikram yoga class. i must admit, if you were on the roads that early and saw a white saturn weaving and running yellow lights, it was shamefully me. i need a bumper sticker: will speed for yoga. next time i am getting frustrated by a crazy driver i hope to be able to say, huh, maybe he's running late for the next yoga class.

here's the thing about bikram yoga (besides the fact that it's 105 degrees with like 50% humidity) - they lock the doors when the class the starts. just goes to show you yoginis must be timely, or else they miss the hardest 90 minute workout of their lives.

so in those 90 minutes, you work every muscle, joint and organ in your body while doing 26 poses, while dripping
with sweat (and i seriously mean dripping...the first class i finished i was shocked that i even had that much sweat in me), while quietly breathing in and out through your nose. in a word, it's challenging. in another word, it's amazing.

you start with a breathing exercise that i honest to goodness think has helped with my allergy and exercise induced asthma. i haven't taken my inhaler on any of my runs since i started bikram, and yesterday for my five miles i didn't even take a preventative puff of my inhaler. kinda crazy, right? but it expands your lungs and forces them to be stronger. and i think mine are.

so that's bikram yoga for you. one of the most memorable classes for me was during my second week - i touched my toes. me! gina - the girl who wanted to puke when it was time for the sit and reach test in gym class. for the next 60 minutes, as sweat dripped from random places and others tried to hide their winces, i could not stop smiling.

if you have any questions or are looking for recommendations in chicago, please let me know. i have been studio-hopping so i can check out all the studios and get the introductory rate of $29 for the first month. i have been to two and appreciate them both for different reasons.

first entry - 3rd week of training

okay, so i decided to start this blog because i wanted to be able to remember how hard i worked to train for my first half marathon. so here we go.

i started training in march. the first week of april i pulled a groin muscle and was out of the game for a good long while until i went to a physical therapist, who was a dream come true. in the meantime, i started up with bikram yoga. holy hell is that an amazing workout. sweaty - but amazing.

the first day at bikram yoga i can remember thinking, "oh! so this is why i injured myself running...i have NO strength in my legs." good to know. so i have been doing bikram at least 3-4 times per week (though in the beginning it was more like 5 or 6 times per week) for a month and a half. my body feels completely different. it is crazy.

so now i am on to a training schedule that i created which links bikram yoga, running (obviously - since i am still training for the half) and these hip strengthening exercises my PT instructed me to do. apparently though my soul is strong, my hips are weak.

today i did my hip exercises and ran 5 miles. i am drinking lots of water since i think when i ran 6 miles on sunday i overdid the exertion and under-did (?) the water intake. i felt shakey and awful. 6 miles is the most i have ever run, so maybe that had something to do with it. anyway, i went to bikram yoga the next day and thought i was going to vomit in the studio. :) wouldn't that have been fun?

since the near-vomiting experience, i ran 3 miles, took a break yesterday, and then ran today, as I said. my next big run in saturday since my 10 year high school reunion is on saturday evening and i feel the open bar might get the best of me at that venue - so my long runs which are usually supposed to be scheduled for sundays, this week will be saturday. not terribly exciting, but i guess worth noting. (obviously i think it's worth noting since i took note of it.)

here is my schedule:
